Way of the Cross

Let us adore Jesus with all our hearts and recite the acts:

God I believe in You who are the Whole Truth

God I hope in You who are full of kindness

God I love You who are full of love

God I repent for offending You who are full of goodness

God I sanctify my soul with Your Sacraments, You who are full of Holiness.

Let us follow Our Lord Jesus on his Way from Pilate’s to Calvary, burdened with the Cross, and beseech Him to enkindle our hearts with the flame of His Love and enlighten us to meditate His sufferings and death.

Let us pray for Our Holy Mother Church, for peace on earth, for the conversion of the sinners, the perseverance of the faithful and the suffrage of the departed in Purgatory.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Blessed be the Passion and death of Our Lord Jesus. Lord have mercy on us and forgive us our sins.

I. Jesus is condemned to death.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

We consider the first mystery, when Jesus was condemned to death.
O Jesus! We thank You for this your great love, and we beseech You to take back the sentence of everlasting death which we have deserved by our sins, so that we may be made worthy to attain to everlasting life.

OUR FATHER, in Heaven, Hallowed be Your Name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as in Heaven, Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

HAIL MARY! Full of grace, The Lord is with thee; Blessed are thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
GLORY BE to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

II. Jesus is made to bear his cross.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how Jesus took upon His shoulders the cross, which our many sins made so heavy.
O Jesus! grant us the grace not to make Your cross heavier by new sins, and cheerfully to carry ours in a true spirit of penance.

III. Jesus falls the first time.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how Jesus, overcome by weariness and pain, fell to the ground under the weight of the cross.

O Jesus! our falls into sin caused You this fall. Grant that we may never renew Your pain by a relapse into sin.

IV. Jesus is met by his Blessed Mother.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER the anguish which filled the hearts of Jesus and Mary at this sorrowful meeting. It was our sins that caused the Son and the Mother this affliction.

O Jesus! excite in us, through the intercession of Thy Holy Mother, a lively sorrow for our sins, that we may bewail them our whole life long, and in the hour of our death find favour with You.

V. The cross is laid on Simon of Cyrene.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how the Jews, seeing that Jesus was no longer able to drag His cross along, compelled Simon of Cyrene to carry it after Him.

O Jesus! we ought to carry the cross, because we have sinned. Give us the grace at least to accompany You on the way to Calvary, and for the love of You cheerfully to bear the cross of adversities.

VI. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how this woman tried to alleviate the sufferings of Jesus, and how He rewarded her by leaving the print of His sacred face on the towel she had in her hands.

O Jesus! grant us the grace to cleanse our souls from all their defilements, and imprint deep in our heart and mind the image of Your holy sufferings.

VII. Jesus falls the second time.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER the sufferings Jesus endures in this second fall. We have been the cause of them, by our frequent relapses into sin.

O Jesus! I stand before You full of shame. Give us the grace so to arise from our sins, as never again to fall back into them.

VIII. Jesus speaks to the women of Jerusalem.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how Jesus exhorts these women to weep, not for Him, but for themselves; to teach us to weep more for our sins than for His sufferings.

O Jesus! give us tears of true contrition, that the sorrow we feel for Your sufferings may be profitable to us.

IX. Jesus falls the third time.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.

R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how Jesus falls the third time, enduring excruciating pain, to atone for your obstinacy in continually committing new sins.

O Jesus! now we are firmly resolved to give up sin forever, so as not to cause You new suffering.

Strengthen us in this our resolution, and by Your grace make it efficacious.

X. Jesus is stripped and receives gall to drink.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER The shame Jesus endured in being stripped of His garments, and the bitterness of the wine mixed with myrrh and gall, which they caused Him to drink. Thus He atoned for our immodesty, and our intemperance of eating and drinking.

O Jesus! We are sorry for all the sins we have committed by sensuality. We promise, with Your assistance, not to renew Your shame and suffering, and to live henceforward in modesty and temperance.

Hail Mary... Glory be to the Father... Jesus Christ Crucified, have mercy on us!

XI. Jesus is nailed to the cross.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER the dreadful sufferings Jesus endured, when the Jews stretched his bleeding body on the cross, and fastened it thereon with nails through His sacred hands and feet.

O Jesus! You suffered all this for us; and should we suffer nothing for You? Fasten our obstinate will to Your cross. We firmly resolve never more to offend You, and for the love of You to suffer everything.

XII. Jesus dies on the cross.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how Jesus, after three hours' agony, dies on the cross for our salvation.

O Jesus! Since You has sacrificed Your life for us, it is but just that we should spend the rest of uue lives for you.

And this we firmly propose to do. Only grant us, by the merits of Your death, the grace to put our resolution in practice.

XIII. Jesus is taken down from the cross.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER the grief of the Mother of God when she received in her arms the body of her divine Son, all pale, covered with blood, and void of life.

O most holy Virgin! obtain for us the grace never more to crucify Jesus afresh by new sins, but by the practice of virtue to keep Him ever alive in us.

XIV. Jesus is laid in the sepulchre.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

CONSIDER how the most sacred body of Jesus was laid, with the greatest reverence, in the new grave prepared for it.

O Jesus! I thank You for all You have suffered in order to redeem us; and we beseech You, grant that we may prepare ourselves to receive worthily, in holy Communion, the body which You have given for us. Take up Your abode forever in our souls.

We thank God for all the good and graces we received during our lives and that we made this Holy Way for His Glory.

Say Hail Mary … in honour of the Maternity of Our Holy Mother.

Say Our Father…, Hail Mary…, and for three times “Grant them O Lord eternal rest” in suffrage of the souls departed and who are in Purgatory.
