Every year this day Malta remembers two Sieges during which Malta experienced months and years of fear and anguish but with deep faith in God and the Virgin Mary they came out victorious. The cost was high but the determination of the Maltese people first with the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in 1565 and then with the British Armed Forces during the Second World War was too strong to be defeated. Since on both instances, victory came on the day the Church celebrates the Birth of the Virgin Mary, 8th of September, they cannot but be entwined to form an integral part of Malta's rich historical past. Mass was sung in in the Basilica at 8.30 a.m, The principal celebrant was the Vicar General of the Diocese, Mgr Giovanni Bosco Gauci. Conclebrating with him were members of the Chapter and Clergy of the Collegiate. Animating the singing was the Choir Schola Cantorum Jubilate directed by Ms Marouska Attard and accompanied on the organ by Mr Joseph Camilleri. At end of Mass, the Te Deum was sung.
