28 MAR 2010 - PALM SUNDAY - PROCESSION BY CHILDREN IN THE EVENING
29. March 2010For the thirtieth year, the young altar boys at the Vocational Centre organised the children's procession of the Passion on Palm Sunday in the evening, a prelude to the renowned Good Friday Procession and Pageant on 2nd April. On a cold evening and watched by a large crowd, young children even down to the age of two showed their worth obeying rules and acting like adults in solemn pageantry. Taking half an hour to leave the Basilica, the return had to be speeded up because the more the night drew nearer the more the cold weather took hold. This unique event in the Maltese islands and as far as is known nothing like it beyond our shores "is worth every second to watch and will surely draw great crowds given the right publicity" an English first time visitor commented after the event. The young directors at the Vocational Centre under the guidance of Mgr Archpriest Carmelo Refalo are to be congratulated for another successful presentation.

At the crossroads in Church Street, an extract from the Gospel was read and, after reciting prayers, Mgr Archpriest Carmelo Refalo went round sprinkling Holy water on the congregation carrying palm and olive branches which then became blessed. The procession continued up Church Street to the Basilica which was closed. Archpriest Refalo who was carrying the Crucifix knocked with it three times on the main door which then opened up and the congregation entered filling all places in the Basilica. Mgr Refalo then entered holding high the Crucifix to the Choir's chanting and the congregation greeting the Crucifix waving the palm and olive branches. Mass was then sung.
